HBO has ordered a Game of Thrones spin-off titled ‘House of The Dragon’, focusing on the life of the Targaryens 300 years prior to the original series.
Face it, Game of Thrones was at its most compelling when Daenerys Targaryen (mother of dragons, breaker of chains blah blah blah) was being a boss ass b**** . The daughter of ‘The Mad King’, played by national treasure Emilia Clarke, was a concurrently relatable and fearsome character that stole audiences’ hearts before burning it to ashes.
And now, GOT fans everywhere are revelling in the news that HBO has ordered a ten-episode prequel/spin-off series titled ‘House of the Dragon’. Sounds fire, right? The series will focus on the Targaryen family 300 years before the events of the OG series and is being created (as we speak) by Miguel Sapochnik (director of the fan-favourite episode ‘Battle of the Bastards’) and Ryan Condal (creator of Colony). And, most importantly, the series will be guided by George R R Martin’s creative input, as well as his Fire & Blood book. What could go wrong?
“Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.” – HBO
“The Game of Thrones universe is so rich with stories. We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George.”– HBO Programming President Casey Bloys
So, what were the Targaryens up to 300 years before Game of Thrones?
300 years before the original series, Aegon the Conqueror (Aegon of House Targaryen First of His Name, King of the blah blah blah) conquered Westeros after his family became the sole survivors of the Doom of Valyria – thanks to Daenys the Dreamer’s prediction.
You still with me? Ok, cool.
He united the realm (with the exceptions of Dorne and those beyond the wall) from his new home of Dragonstone with his wives/sisters Visenya and Rhaenys and his three dragons Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes by his side. Cute. Succeeding this, he went on to found the city of Kings Landing and construct the Iron Throne (with the swords of his enemies and a touch of dragonfire).
This teaches us that HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off will have just as much incest, conflict and conquering blondes screaming ‘DRACARYS’ as the original series. Yay.
Why will this prequel work better than the Naomi Watts cancelled prequel?
The announcement of this spin-off focusing on the Targaryens comes after the news that prequel series ‘Bloodmoon’ starring Naomi Watts was cancelled.
So, what makes HBO so confident in this ten-parter? Well, it’s probably down to the fact that George R R Martin’s 2018 ‘Fire and Blood’ can be used as a foundation for the story. And, even though the book spans over 150 years, it seems that HBO will concentrate on the life of Aegon I Targaryen (mentioned above).
When will House of The Dragon release on HBO Max?
The HBO Max streaming service may release in May 2020, but the Game of Thrones spin-off series is unlikely to air until 2021.
