Efficacy of Remdesivir

The remdesivir showed promising results in the US. Originally, Gilead made the drug for treating Ebola.

Earlier, researchers and US President Donald Trump talked about the efficacy of the drug. “It is really a really promising situation,” said Trump.  O’Day said, “We are humbled with this first step for hospitalized patients. We want to make sure nothing gets in the way of these patients getting the medicine.”

As per Anthony Fauci, “Although the results were clearly positive from a statistically significant standpoint, they were modest.”

US Department of Health and Human Services HHS Secretary Alex Azar said, “FDA’s emergency authorization of remdesivir, two days after the National Institutes of Health’s clinical trial showed promising results, is a significant step forward in battling COVID-19 and another example of the Trump Administration moving as quickly as possible to use science to save lives.”

“NIH (National Institutes of Health), FDA, and scientists across America and around the world have worked tirelessly with patients to get us this new potential treatment for COVID-19. The seamless cooperation between government and private industry under the President’s all-of-America approach to COVID-19 is getting treatment options to patients in record time.”

Pakistan to make remdesivir

Meanwhile, Dr. Zafar Mirza said, Ferozsons Laboratories Limited is making the FDA-approved drug. It got a license from the US company Gilead.

“American company Gilead has manufactured this drug and it has proven effective in treating coronavirus patients,” he said. “It is said that the use of the drug has reduced the intensity of the virus by 30%.”

“Among the five companies [granted the license to manufacture the drug] one of them is a Pakistani company,” he said, it as a “breakthrough news”.

It will not only be available for patients in Pakistan but the plan is to export this drug to 127 countries,” he asserted. “Pakistan will be among three countries in the world to produce and export this to 127 countries. This is a big breakthrough and this is big news for coronavirus patients in Pakistan, who are increasing by the day and are expected to increase more.”

Above all, Bangladesh has sent the remdesivir to Pakistan on humanitarian grounds. Meanwhile, as per Dr. Zafar Mirza, Pakistan will soon be able to produce the drug. Hopefully, it will help in treating Covid-19 patients across the country.
