The Game of Thrones prequel that starred Naomi Watts, set thousands of years before the recent HBO series, has reportedly been dropped.

While the news that another prequel following the Targaryen house has been green lit may excite some, they’ll be sad to hear the news of the other Game of Thrones sequel.

The show, starring Naomi Watts, had already had its pilot shot in Northern Ireland, but as Deadline reports, showrunner Jane Goldman has been emailing the cast and crew, telling them that the series is dead.

A description of the prequel previously released by HBO read:

Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.

From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend, only one thing is for sure: It’s not the story we think we know.”

The prequel was being written by Jane Goldman, alongside George R.R. Martin, and though HBO have yet to make any official announcements, it’s thought that the cancellation has something to do with the new Targaryen-based prequel, set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

The pilot filmed in Northern Ireland was also reportedly received badly, with it going through a number of re-edits at HBO, as well as the production itself being troubled.

Things could change, however. It’s unlikely, but considering the awkward production of the original Game of Thrones prequel had, anything could happen. No-one would have predicted that becoming the behemoth it eventually did.
