Netflix has dropped a trailer for Atypical Season 3 and we are counting down the days

Atypical is the series the whole world needs to see right now.

Atypical follows the trials and tribulations of 19-year-old Sam (Keir Gilchrist) – who is on the autistic spectrum – and his family and friends.

I have feelings about this show.

Primarily because the main motif of the series is this question: What does it really mean to be normal?

Every character on this show is on a journey to learn the answer to that question. If you’re a fan, you’ll know each journey is pretty special and makes for some humorous and heartfelt modern-day viewing.

For years I struggled with the idea of ‘normality’. Like most gay men my age, I spent a pretty large chunk of my early years doing everything I could to chameleon into someone else’s marginalised version of normality. It took way too long for me to finally realise that somebody else’s ‘normal’ can f*ck off.

It’s obviously not quite the same, but because of those hard experiences, I can relate to Sam’s journey.

Atypical is a show that entertains, teaches and informs and you just know it’s doing some good somewhere.

Atypical Season 3 trailer shows Sam at college

Earlier this month, the cast took to Twitter to announce that the third season of the hit Netflix Original series would be returning to the streaming service on 1 November. As with pretty much everything this show does, it was cute AF.

This week, Netflix dropped the official trailer for Season 3 and as of this point we are counting down the days until 1 November.

Okay, minor spoiler alerts ahead.

The series follows Sam and his family, the Gardeners. They’re made up of Sam’s protective little sister, Casey (Brigette Lundy-Paine), his mum, Elsa (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and dad Doug (Michael Rapaport).

Based on the trailer, we know that the Season 3 will explore Sam adjusting to college, Casey exploring her romantic feelings for new school friend Izzie, and Elsa and Doug working out if their relationship has a future after Elsa’s affair. Take a look.

Sara Gilbert and Eric McCormack join Season 3 of Atypical

The Big Bang Theory’s Sara Gilbert and Will and Grace’s Eric McCormack have both joined the cast as professors at Sam’s college this season. Gilbert is playing Sam’s art professor and McCormack is playing his Ethics professor.

I’ve never watched Atypical!

Well, you’ve got a week or so do some serious binging as the first two series are on Netflix ready and waiting for you and your feelings.

Season One kicks off with Sam on a mission to find a girlfriend, after his therapist tells him to “get out there”.

The show itself is made up of quite a few people living on the autistic spectrum –both in the cast and on the production team – especially in Season Two, giving it a unique focus and perspective on a disability that commonly gets overlooked by mainstream media.

If you’ve never seen an episode of Atypical before, you should probably have a read through this list.

Atypical Season 3 will feature 10 new episodes and arrives on Netflix 1 November 2019.
